What is a pulpectomy? 
A pulpectomy is a dental treatment in which the entire pulp from the root canal of a tooth is removed. In adults, this treatment is called a root canal, while in kids, it’s called a pulpectomy. The pulp is a soft tissue that majorly contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissues, which can get infected. This can be caused due to decay or trauma, which makes the pulp inflamed or infected, which, when left untreated, can cause severe discomfort. Since this is usually done on small children, they are prone to tooth loss if left untreated.

Since a pulpectomy can be a challenging and daunting task for any child, you can prepare them beforehand for a smooth experience. Here are some tips: 

• Explain to the child about the procedure and why it is necessary. You should also be prepared for any inquisitive questions to follow.
• Reassure your child that they will feel better after the procedure and will get rid of the current pain and discomfort.
• Bring items that provide your child with comfort, like a blanket and toys, for them to feel at home and calm.
• Plan for aftercare and bring along the child’s familiar painkiller medication. You can also get soft foods for them to eat, as children can get cranky and irritable without food for a long. 
• Make sure to follow all the preoperative instructions which are provided by the dentist so that the procedure can be done smoothly. 
   

What is the procedure for pulpectomy?
Here are some general steps that are involved in the procedure of a pulpectomy though it might vary from patient and case. 

Step 1: The dentist will administer local anesthesia to numb the area around the affected tooth.

Step 2: The dentist will use the necessary tools to make an opening in the top of the tooth. This will provide access to the pulp chamber and root canals. 

Step 3: The whole infected pulp from the root canals will be removed using special dental tools. 

Step 4: Using special files, the dentist will make sure to clean and shape the root canals so that there is no debris or bacteria deposit. 

Step 5: A material called gutta-percha will be filled in the root canals, so seal them so that there is no further infection. 

Step 6: There might be a temporary filling placed in the opening of the teeth till putting a permanent filling or crown is placed. 

Step 7: The dentist will assess the progress of the pulpectomy and suggest further treatment, whichever suits best to the child.
 

Ways to Help Your Child Avoid a Pulpectomy
A child needs to be taught good oral hygiene from the very beginning so that their teeth can be strong and healthy all through their lives. Here are some of the tips to ensure the same: 

• Brushing twice a day for 2 minutes each, in the morning and at night, with a good brush and proper brushing technique.
• Floss daily and use fluoride toothpaste as it strengthens tooth enamel and prevents cavities
• Use mouthwash after eating food
• Limit sugary foods and drinks and instead eat more fruits and vegetables
• Avoid or be cautious of hard foods
• Use a mouthguard for some sports or if your child grinds their teeth.
